Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Advertising’s impact on purchasing behavior is a widely debated topic. Although some believe it to be effective, others suggest that it has become too ubiquitous to have any significant impact. Both sides have compelling arguments, yet I vehemently believe that it is important to fully consider the role of advertising.

To commence with, there is no denying that adverts can be persuasive in nature. Elaborating on this, advertisements are strategically placed on various media platforms such as television, social media, and billboards, making it difficult for us to ignore them. For instance, a well-designed television commercial featuring a celebrity endorsing a product can create a strong influence on the audience and encourage them to buy the product.

Nevertheless, it is true that people have now become desensitized to all the adverts due to their constant bombardment. To brief, the risk of ad-blockers and other digital tools suggests that people are actively trying to skip or ignore it. For example, online users can now skip ads on YouTube videos after a few seconds, and social media platforms allow users to hide or report ads they find irrelevant.

In my opinion, it is imperative to acknowledge the role advertising plays in supporting several businesses and providing jobs, as well as the potential benefits that it can bring, such as informing consumers of new products or services. Instead of viewing these commercials as altogether good or bad, it is crucial to be critical of its messages and make informed decisions when purchasing an item or service.

In conclusion, advertising may have an impact on purchasing behavior since they are critically placed; however, its prevalence has led to desensitization and active efforts to skip it. Despite this, it is necessary to recognize the role it plays before making an informed decision before buying any item.
