In recent years, there has been an ongoing debate about the importance of academic subjects. Although some people believe that history should be given more emphasis, few contend that science and technology is more essential. There are valid arguments for both these subjects yet I strongly support the former view as it fosters a sense of national identity and pride in individuals.
On one hand, history is considered an integral part of our society. Studying it will cater to a deeper understanding of our cultural heritage and the origins of our civilization. By studying the civilizations of Greece and Rome, for instance, we can study their political, economic, and social systems which have significantly contributed to the development of Western society.
On the other hand, science and technology, in today’s fast-paced world, have revolutionized almost every aspect of our lives. To brief, it equips us with the necessary skills to innovate and create new products and technologies that can further improve our life quality. For example, our way of communicating, learning, and operating a business has been utterly transformed because of the invention of the internet.
In my opinion, history is vital for building a sense of pride and national identity. A sense of belonging and shared purpose that can promote social cohesion and national unity could be developed by learning history.
In conclusion, despite the importance of learning science and technology as a school subject, I firmly believe that history should be given more significance since it nurtures a meaningful understanding of the cultural heritage and cultivates a sense of oneness.
