It is believed that secondary school children should study international news as one of their school subjects. Others think that this is a waste of valuable school time. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Write at least 250 words.

Answer

Although certain individuals accentuate the educational value of studying global events as a subject in secondary school curricula, others cast doubt on its relevance and potential to absorb valuable instructional time. Both perspectives present plausible rationales, yet I believe that the demerits of incorporating international news as a mandatory subject outweigh the potential benefits.

On one hand, proponents of infusing international news into secondary education posit that it nurtures critical cogitation and analytical acumen as students navigate complex geopolitical issues. Such knowledge equips them to make informed decisions and become responsible global citizens. Understanding the historical context behind international conflicts, for instance, can provide students with insights into the complex factors shaping modern geopolitics.

On the other hand, opponents contend that it leads to excessive workload and hinders comprehensive learning in other core subjects. The curriculum is already laden with essential subjects, leaving limited time for comprehensive coverage of other topics. For example, dedicating significant time to this subject might detract from foundational subjects like mathematics, science, and language arts, ultimately compromising students’ overall educational development.

In my opinion, it is imperative to recognize the importance of the limited time available for studying foundational subjects. Instead, schools should consider integrating current events discussions within existing subjects, offering students the opportunity to delve into global matters without sacrificing vital scholastic pursuits.

In conclusion, despite immersing students in global affairs can enhance their perspectives and cultivate global awareness, I firmly concur concerns regarding time allocation and curriculum coherence ought not to be disregarded when contemplating the obligatory inclusion of such events in the syllabus.
