Answer

It has been always a debatable topic regarding the high consumption of sugar and its detrimental effects on health. Although it may seem apparent to some individuals that a price hike in sugary items may discourage overconsumption, I beg to differ as there are certain other measures that could be taken into account to curb this problem.

To commence with, the most imperative reason why sugary products should not witness a spike in price is that low-income families rely on these products since it is too affordable than healthier alternatives. If prices are enhanced, this group may further shift their choices to less nutritious foods like maple syrup and sweeteners, later causing many dire health ailments such as obesity and diabetes. Additionally, there are people who are genetically inclined toward consuming more sugar. Merely soaring the prices of these products may make it challenging for these individuals to fulfill their needs.

Nevertheless, there are certain alternatives to encourage people to have fewer sugar items in their diet. First, political authorities can incentivize companies that produce healthier products with the sole purpose to stimulate the general public towards making healthier diet choices. The implementation of a sugar tax in the UK, for instance, has proven to be effective in decreasing the amount of sugar in drinks and motivating manufacturers to create more nutritious options. Furthermore, individuals are more likely to make healthier choices provided that political authorities provide them with information and raise awareness through campaigns.

In conclusion, despite the fact that the given solution of making sugary products as expensive as a king’s ransom may seem plausible, it may not be the best approach as people may either be driven genetically for making this choice or may end up relying on a harmful diet. However, the government can play a major role in manipulating people’s sugar intake choices in the aforementioned ways.
