Answer

Plastic is one of the most commonly used materials in our daily lives even though its production and use have serious repercussions for the environment. This essay discusses the adverse impact of plastic on nature and outlines some solutions that can be implemented by political authorities and citizens to mitigate the problem.

To commence with, plastic waste causes significant damage to the environment, particularly marine life. Elaborating on this, plastic bags, bottles, and packaging often end up in oceans and waterways, where they harm marine animals through ingestion, suffocation, or entanglement. For instance, sea turtles mistake plastic bags for jellyfish and consume them, leading to their death. Additionally, plastic waste can take hundreds of years to decompose, leading to the accumulation of non-biodegradable waste in landfills and natural areas. In addition, plastic garbage can also release harmful chemicals into the environment, which can contaminate water and soil and affect the health of humans and animals.

However, to address the stated issue, governments and individuals can play a significant role. Governments can reduce plastic use by banning single-use plastics, taxing plastic bags, and promoting sustainable practices. The European Union’s recent legislation, for instance, to ban single-use plastics, including straws, cotton buds, and plastic cutlery, is a significant move towards reducing plastic pollution. Alongside, individuals can play a crucial role by reducing their plastic consumption by bringing reusable bags and containers to grocery stores, eliminating the use of single-use plastics, recycling properly, and choosing products with minimal packaging.

In conclusion, it is evident that plastic is a detriment to mother nature as it not only harms the aquatic species but also taints soil and water; however, the implementation of policies by political leaders and the adoption of sustainable practices by individuals can curb the given problem.
