What does a Band 9 Report look like? (According to IDP with the examiner’s review.)

WRITING TASK 1 (Report WRITING)

You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.
The diagram below shows the stages and equipment used in the cement-making process, and how cement is used to produce concrete for the building process.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features and making comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Answer

There are two diagrams showing the different stages in which cement is made and then used to produce concrete.

Overall it can be seen that the production of cement is a more complex process consisting of 4 clear stages, whereas concrete production is much more simple.

Cement production goes through 4 steps before reaching the end product. First of all, a mix of limesone and clay is crushed. It is then mixed in a heated mixing machine before being ground to form cement. The ground cement is then packed into bags, ready to be used as a raw material to make concrete.

Concrete production is rather simple where 4 materials are added to a concrete mixer. Half of the mixture is made up of gravel, consisting of small stones and then sand (25%), and finally cement (15%) and water (10%). The materials are rotated in a concrete mixer drum to form Concrete.

Notes from an IDP's Examiner

Band: 9 (9999)

– TA: This response satisfies the requirements of the task. All key features of the process are appropriately and accurately presented. A very clear overview is presented in the second paragraph. The word count is sufficient for the task.

– CC: The message is easy to read and cohesion is used in such a way that it does not attract attention. Paragraphing, linking, and referencing are all skilfully managed.

– LR: There is a sophisticated use of vocabulary with lower frequency items used correctly [consisting of | clear stages | crushed | made up of | rotated | drum]. There is one spelling error that is most likely a type [limesone].

– GRA: A wide range of structures is used with full flexibility and accuracy.
This response is a good example of a Band 9 performance.
